Learning about Clinching

As clinching is a relatively new process, you can f be forgiven if you have not as yet heard about it. The process which clinching is used for is the joining of two or more sheets of metal, something that had been done in the past using welding or rivets.

Clinching though uses no welding or rivets and yet can join sheets of metal together as efficiently as if they had been used. Although welding can be an effective way of joining sheets of metal, it has the drawback that as it uses heat and flames to create the join, it can be a safety hazard in any workplace. Also as welding requires gases to be used, it can also present a health hazard due to the fumes.

As clinching requires no heat or flames, it is a far safer process than welding and so does not need any of the sometimes expensive safety precautions that have to be taken when welding. As clinching does not use screws or rivets, no holes have to be bored in the sheets of metal and so therefore fewer quality assurance measures have to be taken than would be necessary if using rivets which can again lead to financial savings. As clinching creates joins in the sheets that are unaffected by weather or chemicals, it is being paid special interest by the oil and gas industries who are looking for a better way to join their pipelines throughout the country as their current methods can be affected by weather or chemicals.

The clinching process is one that causes buttons to be formed holding the metal sheets together and these buttons are created by applying pressure to those sheets. The tool used to apply that pressure is known as a clinching tool and that tool, along with a pointed die, create the pressure which in turn creates the button. As sheets of metal of different thicknesses have to be joined, clinching machines of different sizes have been developed and are available to use.

Also as there are many different uses for the metal sheets when they have been joined together, there are variety of tools that can be used in a variety of different conditions and locations. Some of the clinching machines are large and intended for use in manufacturing plants but others are smaller and more mobile, allowing them to be used in a variety of locations.

There are even clinching machines which have been especially developed to clinch sheets of metal that have irregular shapes and other tools that can clinch curved metal sheets.
